A useful KN95 buying process starts with the standard and manufacturer documentation, then moves to fit and comfort. Marketing phrases such as “5 layer” can describe construction, but they do not replace standards-based verification.

1. Check the exact claim

Identify what standard the manufacturer says the respirator meets. Do not confuse an international KN95 with a NIOSH Approved N95.

2. Prioritize fit

The respirator should sit over the nose and under the chin with minimal gaps. If you cannot achieve a snug fit, try another size or style.

3. Inspect markings and documentation

Look for manufacturer identification and standard-related markings appropriate to the product. Be cautious of vague certification language without supporting detail.

4. Match the use case

Consumer particle exposure, wildfire smoke and regulated workplace use can have different requirements. A respirator also does not protect against gases or vapors unless specifically designed for them.
