Masks for Wildfire Smoke
Wildfire smoke contains particles as well as gases and vapors. Particle-filtering respirators can reduce exposure to particles when they fit properly, but they do not remove all gases or vapors.
What NIOSH recommends
NIOSH guidance for wildfire smoke points to NIOSH Approved N95 or P100 respirators when considering disposable respirators. A good seal is essential.
Children and smoke
CDC says children age 2 and older can wear respirators, but the chosen size must fit properly and comfortably. Products are often designed around adult workplace use and may not have broad testing in children.
Know the limitation
An N95, KN95 or similar particulate respirator is not a gas mask. Particle filtration does not mean protection from harmful gases or vapors.
